See? There's always something missing. →
This time they got the tortilla frying-then-baking down, but where’s the sauce? That salsa? Whatever. You put salsa on top of enchiladas no matter what. But if you don’t bake them in a sauce those tortillas are going to have no flavor. Ugh. FAIL.

Lemon Saffron Orzo with Shrimp is an Awesome...
Memorial Day Weekend: time to get up off your couch and bring your potluck A Game. Especially when you’re invited to a barbecue and you know your hosts are totally skilled at kicking out the party food jams. It’s a good thing you have this recipe for saffron orzo with shrimp, because it’s practically perfect for potluck parties in every way.
Since it’s a pasta salad,...

Variations on a Macaron Volume 1: Matcha
My Mother’s Day present to my mom: matcha macarons, filled with fresh strawberries and white chocolate ganache. (Also, a copy of The Silver Palate Cookbook.)
I think I overwhipped the meringue, because they didn’t come out nearly as smooth and pretty as I would have liked. But they tasted great, and I love how the color turned out on the inside! Not my finest macaron moment, but...

My Mom's Enchiladas Are Better Than Yours
Do you have a favorite meal that just tastes better when your mom makes it? Mine is chicken enchiladas.
Amid a sea of mediocrity, her recipe is a shining beacon of simple perfection that has ruined every other enchilada in the world for me, restaurant or otherwise. There’s a lot of nonsense out there that might suggest otherwise, but as far as I’m concerned, there’s one...

Chicken Soup Fixes Everything
I ended last weekend feeling fairly under the weather. Not really certifiably sick, just groggy, exhausted, and at odds with the world. My mom would call it “low biorhythms,” and I knew I needed to do something about it. All I could think of was to make chicken noodle soup. My plan was to swing by the grocery store on the way home from work, pick up everything I thought I might need...

Catching Up: Sunday Brunch at Alchemy
Alchemy San Diego, CA
What is up with this Denny’s Baconalia nonsense lately? Gross. This is how you do bacon right. The Farmer’s BLT: crisp thick-cut Berkshire bacon, grilled organic tomatoes, and Suzie’s Farm red leaf lettuce on sourdough bread. Garlic aioli and taro root chips on the side. Then I’m pretty sure I also got the Hail Mary, which is a Bloody Mary with...

Catching Up: Pizza & Chicken Love Letter
Where do you go for a twelve-year best friends anniversary celebration? Ally and I heard that the twelfth year is traditionally the Diamond Jamboree anniversary, so we headed back up to Irvine to make it happen. True fact: there is no such thing as too much Diamond Jamboree. There are already restaurants for days, but — much to our delight — we returned to find that the greatest...

Hell of Avocados, Hell of Tomatoes
Farmer’s market today!
Heirloom tomatoes, regular tomatoes, a lime and an apple and a bunch of cilantro. A bunch of Reed avocados, which I’d never heard of before but the samples were awesome and they were practically as big as my head and three for $6 so why not. The guy at the avocado booth threw in a passionfruit on the house. “Passionfruit is for the ladies,” he...

You Could Basically Eat This Shredded Chicken...
I’m a simple girl. Food doesn’t have to look glossy and impeccable to make me happy. All I ask is that it be tasty and delicious like a fiesta in my mouth. This shredded chicken is a good example of that principle, and also kind of a major staple in my diet.
I’m always looking for a good excuse to make a batch of shredded chicken. It’s hell of comfort food because...

I’d just like to take some time out from my busy schedule of never posting to say: how good is this song? SO FUCKING GOOD. From the books I always pictured The Clash at Demonhead as sounding unbearably fractured. (Maybe like Blood Brothers?) Instead they turned out to be Metric which is infinitely better. Love...

Dear Farmer's Market
I love you so hard. Thank you for supplying me with tasty rainbow carrots and nectarines and edible flowers and heirloom tomatoes on the hella cheap. I will brave the blazing heat of August for your magical wares. I’m sorry I’m still sans digicam and can’t show your wondrous bounty off to the world, but I did take some snaps with my Holga so expect some blurry documentation in no...

All East Asia in a Shopping Center
TRUE FACT: Ally and I take the best road trips.
This week I wanted to drive up to South Coast Plaza to buy a new pair of glasses at the Paul Frank store, and she graciously came along for great company and to act as a fashionable voice of reason. San Diego to Costa Mesa and back is a long drive, but it’s worth it a million times over when it’s supported along the way by a trip to...

Impulse Shopping is my Life
So I have identified my main problems when it comes to grocery shopping and cooking cohesive meals:
I am an impulsive shopper.
I am an emotional shopper.
I very rarely have a plan.
Yesterday I went to Trader Joe’s to buy some milk and eggs. I’d also just spent five hours at doctor’s offices and getting x-rays done, and was in a terrible mood. I ended up walking out with:

Chili Simmering, Don't Be Jealous
The weather around here lately has been chronicles of ridiculous. May Gray and June Gloom are one thing, but dark days in July (in California no less!) are utterly intolerable unless you are down for curling up on the couch with a movie and a mug of something warm and hearty and spicy. Of course, that’s a scenario for which I am always down.
Chili is one of my favorite things. I could...

Honey, I Shrunk the Tomatoes and Made You These...
Hey, remember those adorable baby tomatoes I bought at farmer’s market?
A.) I did some research, and I think they are Chadwick cherry tomatoes. B.) Whatever they are, they finally found a home in these delicious little tomato and goat cheese tarts.
Long story short: sometimes I like to get my gangly awkwardness involved in powderpuff football, and I was charged with bringing an...

A Good Egg Sandwich is the Breakfast of Champions
There’s only so much research you can do to prepare for a nerve-wracking job interview. When my own Morning of Reckoning came around on Friday, there was only one thing left to do: make myself a strong cup of coffee and an egg sandwich. It’s one of my all-time favorite breakfasts ever—it’s super quick and easy, and with protein to wake up your brain and flavor to brighten...
