What we made with last week’s farmer’s market (and surrounding area) finds:
Went over to my parents’ for my mom’s birthday and she was feeling a little Gwyneth Paltrowesque, so we grilled pizzas over the barbecue. On one: prosciutto, pear, fresh mozzarella, basil. On the other: capicola, spinach, fresh ricotta, pine nuts. (The pictured pizza slice came home with me as leftovers, and ended up with a little bit of both worlds.)
Mixed green salad with both lettuces, plus pears and blood orange.
Blood orange sangria.
So yeah, we ate pretty well last weekend.

The spoils of Little Italy Mercato, May 28. I got there fifteen minutes before closing, which meant a mad Supermarket Sweep style dash from one end of the market to the other and back again. Here is what I ended up with:
Basil (Mr. and Mrs. Green’s)
Blood Oranges (Polito Family Farms)
Butter and Red Leaf Lettuce (Sage Mountain Farm)
Strawberries (Sage Mountain Farm)
Not bad! Ran into some friends along the way as well (including Hillary whose cooking blog you should be reading more than anyone’s) which is always a plus. After farmer’s market I headed down the road a couple blocks to Mona Lisa deli for some pears, capicola, and a pound of fresh ricotta. Also pictured is a jar of sage and clover honey from Alpine that I picked up last week from my go-to honey guy. All in all, looks like some delicious times ahead.

Hell of Avocados, Hell of Tomatoes

Farmer’s market today!

Heirloom tomatoes, regular tomatoes, a lime and an apple and a bunch of cilantro. A bunch of Reed avocados, which I’d never heard of before but the samples were awesome and they were practically as big as my head and three for $6 so why not. The guy at the avocado booth threw in a passionfruit on the house. “Passionfruit is for the ladies,” he says. Quote of the day, hands down.

Dear Farmer’s Market

I love you so hard. Thank you for supplying me with tasty rainbow carrots and nectarines and edible flowers and heirloom tomatoes on the hella cheap. I will brave the blazing heat of August for your magical wares. I’m sorry I’m still sans digicam and can’t show your wondrous bounty off to the world, but I did take some snaps with my Holga so expect some blurry documentation in no less than ten million years when I finish my new roll of film. (Sigh.) xoxo

Honey, I Shrunk the Tomatoes and Made You These Awesome Tarts

Hey, remember those adorable baby tomatoes I bought at farmer’s market?

A.) I did some research, and I think they are Chadwick cherry tomatoes.
B.) Whatever they are, they finally found a home in these delicious little tomato and goat cheese tarts.

Fuck Yeah Farmer’s Market!

There are farmer’s markets all over San Diego, and I pretty much never go. Isn’t that sad? But no more! I made up my mind to go this week, and I am now a steadfast convert. BEHOLD, the spoils of my excursion (clockwise from top):

  • 1 Bunch of French Breakfast Radishes ($2)
  • 1/2lb Adorable Baby Tomatoes ($1)
  • 1/2lb Lemon Cucumbers ($1)
  • 1lb Ridiculously Flavorful Tomatoes ($3)

Everything this time came from Suzie’s Farm except the big tomatoes, which came from a stand wisely offering free samples. My big purchase question so far is this: what the hell are French breakfast radishes and what can you do with them? All I know so far is that they are small and irresistibly pretty (the perfect combination for a reckless impulse buy). The girl at the stand said you can basically just slice them up raw for breakfast (natch) with a bit of butter and salt, but I’m going to be on the lookout for recipes as well.

I know, disappearing for days on end is a terrible way to start a new blog. But I have a new resolve and, what’s more, I have vegetables for days.
