SUSHI NINJAS FOOD TRUCK La Jolla, CA
Okay, so it ended up taking me seventeen days to fulfill my sushi wish, and not only did I actually NOT die, but it was so worth it. On Saturday the Sushi Ninjas food truck officially opened for business out by the UTC mall. You’d better believe we were there.
So what we have here is a Jessica Albacore hand roll (Included: albacore with crispy onions, garlic chips, cucumber, gobo, daikon sprouts, and garlic ponzu sauce. Not included: herpes.) and an Afro Ninja cut roll (spicy tuna, spicy crab, jalapeno, cream cheese, and avocado deep-fried with eel sauce and spicy mayo). All this for less than $10! We also snacked on garlic edamame — something I’ve never seen before, and now I wonder why because it was not just so good but so simple! — but I neglected to snap a picture. They basically just looked like edamame, so use your imagination.
I’ll be writing about Sushi Ninjas on my website for work later, but I couldn’t resist writing just a little bit now. Hey — if you were eating take-out sushi that looked that good, you’d be bragging, too.

Asahi Ramen Sawtelle Blvd, Los Angeles, CA
Went to LA on Monday for work and made a full day of it. Asked April for some ramen recommendations and this is where we ended up. It took a couple of wrong turns and and a little bit of panic to get to the tiny little shop front, but it was well worth it. Look at this menu. Look at the size of those bowls. Chashu ramen for the boy, miso ramen for me. Sliced pork, bamboo shoots, green onion, a hard-boiled egg, and tender ramen noodles in a delicious broth. Spicy pickles on the side. Incredibly simple and incredibly good.

All East Asia in a Shopping Center

TRUE FACT: Ally and I take the best road trips.

This week I wanted to drive up to South Coast Plaza to buy a new pair of glasses at the Paul Frank store, and she graciously came along for great company and to act as a fashionable voice of reason. San Diego to Costa Mesa and back is a long drive, but it’s worth it a million times over when it’s supported along the way by a trip to the single greatest business park in Southern California.

¡Lucha Libre Para Siempre!
Grabbing lunch with my friend Mal is always good times. Yesterday we hit up Lucha Libre, which has somehow gotten even better since last time I was there. (Which was apparently two years ago, how did that happen?!) The place has been blowing up exponentially since it was featured on Man Vs. Food so the line was insane, but it was worth it. The much-talked-about Surfin’ California was tempting but my stomach probably would have exploded, so instead I opted for two new items on the menu. The Vegy Taco (roasted zucchini and mushrooms, beans, panela cheese, poblano sauce, oh my god) was amazing—filling yet still light—and the “TJ Corn” was essentially elote-in-a-cup. How much do I love elote? I LOVE ELOTE SO MUCH! But I hate gnawing and gumming up corn on the cob, so elote-in-a-cup is pretty much the best thing ever to happen to corn and mayonnaise and my mouth.
All this and a beer and a side of chips for only $8? Be still, my taco-loving heart. My cell phone camera is doing this no justice. No justice at all.
